TOPIC: Ability to track non-summits (or summit attempts)

Ability to track non-summits (or summit attempts) 1 Month, 2 Weeks ago Karma: 0
I think it's cool to track my summits, but I was also wanting to track summit attempts and non-summits too. I want to keep track of my yearly elevation gain and mileage and I want to use the database here. But it doesn't appear I can add a non-summit or summit attempt (both mileage and elevation gain) to my list! What's the best way to do this?

Too funny, the database used to be set-up so you could do this, but I changed it before the site went live because it seemed confusing to most testers of the site. Now that the database is already populated, I can't go back and change it, but what I could do is add another table. The real problem lies in wanting to track "non-summits" or just hikes in general. I'll have to look into that. I think it is totally doable, I just need to sit down with some free time. Right now most of my weekends are devoted to climbing mountains and the weeknights are devoted to my family and the occasional trip report. Stay posted CV!

I do have a workaround. I can pick a specific red-herring peak, and keep adding it as a summit that I have climbed. It would be better if you created a summit called "Other" or "N/A" and let me track against that. I don't think it's hard to add a new summit to the database, right?

Also, another thing is the resolution of the distance is just in integer miles. So if I hiked 6.4 miles, it only shows up as 6 miles (both online and in the CSV dump). Can you increase the resolution to tenths or even hundredths of miles?

Yes I believe both of those suggestions are feasible and can probably be implemented tonight.

All of your requests have been implemented. I added a peak "N/A" to the list. I will also add some explanation about that in the summit table itself. Good idea. P.S. it is the last summit on the list.

Awesome! I was able to add "N/A" several times with the higher resolution distance. I also verified that the CSV dump is faithful at preserving the resolution, and the elvation and prominance averages are not skewed by "N/A" having 0 for both of these. So great job! Now I can track against "N/A" for everything that isn't a summit. I really don't want to feel bad about not making a summit due to weather and conditions. What matters to me right now is distance and elevation gain. I'd really like to also get in as many summits as I can

Cool I'm glad it worked for you. I'm also glad that someone other than me finds the CSV export to be useful haha.
